In which English city did C.S. Lewis hold his academic post at Oxford University for most of his career?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis held his long Oxford University academic career in Oxford, England.

Lewis became a Fellow and tutor in English at Magdalen College, Oxford, in 1925. He remained there until 1954, teaching literature and developing the friendships and intellectual habits that influenced his fiction and apologetics. Oxford was also where he met J.R.R. Tolkien and other members of the literary discussion group known as the Inklings.

Lewis later left Oxford for Cambridge University, where he became the first holder of the medieval and Renaissance English chair at Magdalene College in 1954. This move can cause confusion in biographical questions: Cambridge was his final academic base, but Oxford was the university associated with most of his teaching career. He died in 1963, shortly before his 65th birthday.
