In which crypt is Antoni Gaudí buried?
Answer
Sagrada Família crypt
Answer
Sagrada Família crypt
Antoni Gaudí is buried in the Sagrada Família crypt.
His tomb lies in the chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, within the church’s Neo-Gothic crypt. The crypt is beneath the basilica and was begun before Gaudí transformed the project’s design after becoming its chief architect in 1883.
Gaudí devoted the latter part of his life to the Sagrada Família and lived and worked closely with the construction project. After he died in Barcelona in 1926, he was buried in the church he had made the central work of his career. His grave is distinct from the basilica’s main altar and from the nearby chapels in the crypt.
A common mix-up is Colònia Güell, another major Gaudí project with a famous crypt. Gaudí designed the unfinished church there, but he is not buried in its crypt. The correct location is the Sagrada Família crypt, more precisely the chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
