In which country was the magical realist author Gabriel García Márquez born?

The story behind the answer

Gabriel García Márquez was born in Colombia.

He was born on March 6, 1927, in Aracataca, a small town in Colombia's Caribbean region. The landscape, family stories, local legends, and memories of Aracataca later helped shape the fictional town of Macondo, most famously depicted in One Hundred Years of Solitude. García Márquez was raised for part of his childhood by his maternal grandparents, whose storytelling strongly influenced his imagination.

García Márquez became one of the leading writers of the Latin American Boom and helped popularize magical realism: a style in which supernatural events appear within ordinary social and historical life without disrupting the characters' matter-of-fact attitude. His major works include One Hundred Years of Solitude, Love in the Time of Cholera, and Chronicle of a Death Foretold.

Readers sometimes confuse his birthplace with Mexico, where he lived for many years and died in Mexico City in 2014. His nationality and birthplace remained Colombian, and he received the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature.
