In which country is Wimbledon held?
Answer
England
Answer
England
Wimbledon is held in England, in the Wimbledon district of southwest London. The tournament’s official venue is the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, commonly called the All England Club.
The first Wimbledon Championships took place in 1877 at the club’s original grounds on Worple Road. As the tournament became more popular, the club moved to its present Church Road site in 1922. Wimbledon is therefore associated with both a London neighbourhood and the wider country of England, which is part of the United Kingdom.
A common mix-up is answering “London” when the question asks for a country: London is the city, while England is the country. “United Kingdom” is also geographically correct as the sovereign state, but “England” is the usual canonical quiz answer because the Championships are specifically located in England. Another potential confusion is Wimbledon Park, the nearby area and Underground station; the tennis venue itself is at Church Road in Wimbledon, London.
