In which country is the volcano Eyjafjallajökull?

The volcano Eyjafjallajökull is in Iceland.

Eyjafjallajökull is both a glacier-covered stratovolcano and an ice cap in southwestern Iceland. Its name roughly means “glacier of the mountains of the islands,” referring to the surrounding Eyjafjöll range. The volcano lies west of the larger Mýrdalsjökull ice cap and rises to about 1,651 metres above sea level beneath its ice cover.

The volcano became globally famous in 2010, when an eruption beneath the ice generated meltwater, ash, and explosive activity. Fine ash spread through European air routes, leading to the cancellation of more than 100,000 flights and affecting millions of travellers. The eruption itself lasted from March to June 2010.

The name is often difficult for non-Icelandic speakers because of its length and unusual spelling, so it is sometimes shortened informally to “E15.” It is also commonly confused with Iceland’s nearby Katla volcano, which lies beneath Mýrdalsjökull. Although the two systems are geographically close, they are distinct volcanoes.
