In which country is the town of Auxerre?

Auxerre is a town in France. It is the prefecture, or administrative capital, of the Yonne department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of east-central France.

The town stands on the Yonne River, a major tributary of the Seine, and lies southeast of Paris. Auxerre has long been associated with Burgundy, one of France’s best-known historic and wine-producing regions. Its old center contains medieval streets, traditional houses, and notable churches, including the Abbey of Saint-Germain and Auxerre Cathedral.

Auxerre’s history reaches back to the Roman period, when it was known as Autissiodorum. During the Middle Ages it became an important religious and regional center. The surrounding area was also connected with viticulture, and the nearby Chablis wine region is part of the broader Yonne wine landscape.

The town is sometimes recognized internationally through football club AJ Auxerre, founded in 1905. Despite its historic importance, Auxerre should not be confused with a country or a separate Burgundy nation: it is a French commune and departmental capital.
