In which country is the Salar de Uyuni salt flat located?

The story behind the answer

The Salar de Uyuni salt flat is located in Bolivia.

Salar de Uyuni lies in Bolivia’s Daniel Campos Province near the crest of the Andes, at an elevation of about 3,656 metres. Covering roughly 10,000 square kilometres, it is the world’s largest salt flat. During the dry season, its surface forms a vast geometric pattern of salt crust; after a thin layer of rainwater, it can create a striking mirror effect.

The salt flat developed from prehistoric lakes that evaporated and left mineral deposits behind. Beneath the crust is a major reserve of lithium-rich brine, making the region important to discussions about batteries and electric transport. Extracting those resources must be balanced against the fragile high-altitude environment and local water concerns.

Salar de Uyuni is sometimes confused with Chile’s Atacama salt flats or Argentina’s large salt pans. Its name combines salar, meaning salt flat, with Uyuni, the nearby town and municipality. The landscape is also a major tourism destination in Bolivia.
