In which country is the Great Wall of China located?

The story behind the answer

The Great Wall of China is located in China.

The Great Wall is a connected and overlapping system of walls, fortifications, watchtowers, and other defensive works built across northern China. It was not constructed as one continuous project. Earlier states built separate walls, and later rulers connected or rebuilt sections for defense, border control, and communication.

The best-known surviving sections date from the Ming dynasty, which ruled from 1368 to 1644. These sections often use brick and stone and are especially visible near Beijing. Earlier walls frequently used tamped earth and other local materials.

The wall is sometimes described as visible from the Moon with the naked eye, but that claim is false. Its width and colour make it difficult to distinguish from the surrounding landscape even from low Earth orbit. The structure is a Chinese cultural landmark, but it is not a single uniform wall from one era.
