In which country is the Erg Chebbi dune field, one of the Sahara’s best-known tourist landscapes?

The story behind the answer

Erg Chebbi, one of the Sahara’s best-known tourist landscapes, is in Morocco.

Erg Chebbi is a large area of wind-shaped sand dunes in southeastern Morocco, close to the town of Merzouga and near the Algerian border. The word “erg” refers to a sandy desert area, although individual dune fields vary greatly in size and shape.

The dunes are famous for their orange and golden colours, especially around sunrise and sunset. Tourism commonly includes camel excursions, overnight camps and visits to nearby communities. The landscape is also associated with Morocco’s wider Tafilalt region, an important historic oasis area.

Erg Chebbi is sometimes confused with Erg Chigaga, another Moroccan dune field farther west. Neither name refers to the entire Sahara; both are specific Moroccan sand landscapes within the much larger desert.
