The capital city of Managua is located in Nicaragua. Managua is the country’s largest city and sits on the southwestern shore of Lake Managua, also called Lake Xolotlán, in Central America.

The city became Nicaragua’s capital in 1852. Its location between the older, rival cities of León and Granada made it a practical compromise for the national government. Before becoming the capital, Managua was a relatively small settlement; it expanded rapidly during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Managua’s history has been shaped by natural disasters. A major earthquake in 1931 destroyed much of the city, and another devastating earthquake struck on December 23, 1972. The latter severely damaged the historic centre, so modern Managua developed as a spread-out city rather than around a single traditional downtown.

The name is sometimes linked to Indigenous languages and interpreted as referring to water or a place surrounded by water, reflecting the city’s lakes and lagoons. Managua should not be confused with Lake Managua, which shares its name.
