In which country is the ancient city of Angkor located?

The story behind the answer

The ancient city of Angkor is located in Cambodia.

Angkor was the capital region of the Khmer Empire, which dominated much of mainland Southeast Asia from roughly the ninth to the fifteenth centuries. The archaeological area near Siem Reap contains temples, reservoirs, roads, urban remains, and religious monuments spread across a large landscape.

Angkor Wat is the best-known monument and was originally built in the twelfth century under King Suryavarman II. It began as a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu and was later used as a Buddhist site. Other major monuments include the Bayon, known for its large carved faces, and Ta Prohm, whose ruins are intertwined with trees.

Angkor was supported by an extensive water-management system that included reservoirs and canals. Scholars continue to study how climate shifts, political changes, infrastructure pressures, and regional conflict contributed to the city’s transformation and decline. Angkor became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. Cambodia’s national flag prominently depicts Angkor Wat, making the monument an important national symbol.
