In which country is the 2026 Open Championship being played?

The story behind the answer

The 2026 Open Championship is being played in England, at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, Merseyside. The venue lies in North West England, near Liverpool, and is one of the historic links courses in the Open Championship rota.

The tournament is officially the 154th Open Championship and is scheduled for July 16–19, 2026. Royal Birkdale's selection gives the championship its 11th visit to the club. It previously hosted the event in 1954, 1961, 1965, 1971, 1976, 1983, 1991, 1998, 2008 and 2017.

A common mix-up is to call every Open venue Scottish because Scotland has hosted many editions and the championship originated there. England has also been a major part of the rota, with Royal Birkdale, Royal Liverpool and Royal Lytham & St Annes among its principal venues. The 2026 championship therefore returns to an English course with a long record of major golf.
