In which country is Mount Aconcagua located?
Answer
Argentina
Answer
Argentina
Mount Aconcagua is located in Argentina, in Mendoza Province’s section of the Andes. Although it stands close to the Chilean border, the summit is on the Argentine side.
With a summit elevation of about 6,967 metres, Aconcagua is the highest mountain in the Americas, the Western Hemisphere, and the Southern Hemisphere. It is also the highest mountain outside Asia and one of the Seven Summits, the highest peaks on each continent.
Aconcagua is often mistaken for a Chilean mountain because the Andes form much of the Argentina–Chile border and the peak is only about 15 kilometres from that boundary. Its surroundings are protected within Aconcagua Provincial Park, which includes glaciers and high-altitude valleys such as Horcones and Las Vacas.
The mountain was a sacred site for the Inca, and archaeological discoveries have found high-altitude ceremonial remains, including the remains of a child. The first recorded ascent was made in 1897 by Swiss guide Matthias Zurbriggen, during an expedition led by Edward FitzGerald.
