In which country is Bolt Technology based?

Bolt Technology is based in Estonia, with its headquarters in the capital city of Tallinn.

The company began in 2013 under the name Taxify. Founder Markus Villig started by building a taxi-booking service for Tallinn and recruiting drivers locally. The Estonian startup then expanded into neighboring Baltic markets before entering additional countries across Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America. In 2019, it changed its name from Taxify to Bolt.

Bolt is sometimes mistaken for a Lithuanian, Latvian or Finnish company because it operates extensively around the Baltic and Nordic regions. Its origins, legal identity and headquarters are Estonian, however. Bolt Technology OÜ is the company’s official name, and Tallinn remains its corporate home.

The business has also grown beyond ride-hailing. Its services include electric scooters, car-sharing, food delivery, grocery delivery and other forms of urban mobility. That broader portfolio is why Bolt is often described as a mobility platform rather than simply a taxi app.
