In which country did the Olympic Games originate?

The story behind the answer

The Olympic Games originated in ancient Greece.

The ancient Olympic Games were held at Olympia, a sanctuary in the western Peloponnese dedicated primarily to Zeus. The earliest traditionally recorded festival took place in 776 BCE, although athletic and religious activity at the site began earlier.

The games formed part of a wider Greek religious festival and included events such as footraces, wrestling, boxing, pankration, chariot racing, and the pentathlon. Competitors came from Greek cities and colonies, and a sacred truce helped enable travel during the festival period.

The ancient games continued for centuries before being suppressed in the late 4th century CE, during the Christianization of the Roman Empire. The modern Olympic Games began in Athens in 1896 through the work of Pierre de Coubertin and the International Olympic Committee, but they were inspired by the ancient Greek tradition.
