In which concentration camp did Anne Frank die?

Anne Frank died in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in German-occupied Europe. She and her sister Margot were transferred there from Auschwitz in November 1944 after the family’s hiding place in Amsterdam was discovered and the occupants were arrested.

Bergen-Belsen was originally established as a prisoner-of-war camp and later became a concentration camp. By the final months of the Second World War, overcrowding, starvation and disease had made conditions catastrophic. A typhus epidemic swept through the camp, and Anne is believed to have died from typhus in February or March 1945. The exact date was never recorded.

A common mix-up is Auschwitz, where Anne arrived after deportation and where her mother, Edith, later died. Anne’s father, Otto Frank, was the only member of the immediate family to survive the Holocaust. After the war, he arranged publication of her diary, which became one of the best-known personal accounts of persecution under Nazi rule.
