In which city’s Hall of Mirrors was the Treaty of Versailles signed in 1919?

The story behind the answer

The Treaty of Versailles was signed in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles in Versailles, France, on 28 June 1919.

The treaty formally ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied Powers after the First World War. It required Germany to accept responsibility for wartime damage under Article 231, impose military restrictions, make territorial changes and provide reparations. The settlement also created the League of Nations framework, although the United States never ratified the treaty and did not join the League.

The Hall of Mirrors had powerful symbolism. The German Empire had been proclaimed in the same room in 1871 after France’s defeat in the Franco-Prussian War. In 1919, the Allies deliberately used the palace setting to emphasize Germany’s changed position.

Versailles is a city west of Paris, not simply another name for the French capital. The treaty was negotiated during the Paris Peace Conference, but the signing ceremony took place at Versailles.
