In which city will you find the Brandenburg Gate?

The Brandenburg Gate is in Berlin, Germany, at the western end of the boulevard Unter den Linden beside Pariser Platz. It is one of Berlin’s most recognizable landmarks and a major symbol of German history.

The neoclassical gate was commissioned by King Frederick William II of Prussia and built between 1788 and 1791. Architect Carl Gotthard Langhans modeled it partly on the Propylaea, the monumental gateway to the Acropolis in Athens. The Quadriga—a chariot drawn by four horses—was added to its roof in 1793.

During the Cold War, the Brandenburg Gate stood in the restricted area beside the Berlin Wall and came to represent the division of the city. After the Wall fell in 1989, it became a powerful symbol of reunification. It is sometimes mistakenly described as a surviving medieval gate, but the present structure is an 18th-century monument built as a ceremonial entrance to Berlin.
