Pennsylvania’s America250 time capsule will be buried in Philadelphia on July 4, 2026.
Philadelphia was the meeting place of the Second Continental Congress when it adopted the Declaration of Independence in 1776. It was also the location of the Constitutional Convention and Independence Hall, making the city one of the most important historical settings for the national anniversary.
The planned time capsule is intended to connect the 2026 celebration with the distant future. It is scheduled to be unearthed on July 4, 2276, the 500th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. That long interval gives the project a deliberate link between the semiquincentennial and a future quincentennial.
The city is sometimes confused with Boston, New York City, or Charleston because all three are identified with major Revolutionary-era events and are listed among the leading cities for anniversary activities. Philadelphia’s specific role here comes from the planned capsule and its connection to Independence National Historical Park.
