In which city was the United Nations Charter signed in 1945?

The story behind the answer

The United Nations Charter was signed in San Francisco in 1945.

Delegates from 50 countries met at the United Nations Conference on International Organization from April 25 to June 26, 1945. Their work produced the founding treaty of the United Nations, intended to establish a framework for international cooperation after the Second World War.

The Charter was signed at the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center on June 26, 1945. Poland did not attend the conference but signed later, bringing the number of original signatories to 51. The Charter entered into force on October 24, 1945.

New York City became the permanent home of the United Nations headquarters, which is why the organization is often associated with New York. Geneva is also an important UN centre, but it was not the signing city for the Charter.
