The oldest university in Scandinavia, founded in 1477, was established in Uppsala, Sweden. Uppsala University received its founding charter from Pope Sixtus IV and remains the oldest university in Sweden and the Nordic countries.
The university initially developed around the medieval ecclesiastical center of Uppsala. Its original charter recognized traditional faculties including theology, law, medicine, and philosophy, giving the institution privileges modeled on major European universities such as Bologna.
Uppsala later became a major center of Swedish intellectual and cultural life. Scientists associated with the city include Anders Celsius, whose name is attached to the Celsius temperature scale, and Carl Linnaeus, a pioneer of modern biological classification. The university’s student “nation” traditions are also an important part of Swedish academic culture.
