The Japanese surrender ceremony for the China theater was held in Nanjing.
The ceremony took place on 9 September 1945, one week after the formal surrender aboard USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. General Yasuji Okamura, commander-in-chief of the Japanese China Expeditionary Army, signed the surrender document for Japanese forces in China.
General He Yingqin accepted the surrender on behalf of the Republic of China and the Allied powers. The ceremony was held at the auditorium of the Central Army Military Academy in Nanjing, then the capital of the Republic of China. The document was prepared in both Japanese and Chinese.
This event should not be confused with Japan’s main surrender ceremony in Tokyo Bay or with later regional surrender ceremonies in Southeast Asia, Korea, and the Philippines. Japan’s armed forces surrendered in a series of local ceremonies because they were scattered across a vast area of Asia and the Pacific.
