In which city was the iconic V-J Day kiss photograph taken?

The story behind the answer

The iconic V-J Day kiss photograph was taken in New York City.

Alfred Eisenstaedt photographed the scene in Times Square on August 14, 1945, as crowds gathered after news spread that Japan had accepted the Allied surrender terms. Times Square became a major center for spontaneous celebrations, with civilians, sailors, and other servicemen filling the streets.

The image shows a U.S. Navy sailor kissing a woman in a light-colored uniform. It was published in Life magazine and became a visual symbol of relief and celebration at the end of the war with Japan.

The photograph was not taken on September 2, the day Japan signed the formal surrender document. It was taken weeks earlier, on the day associated in the United States with the public announcement of Japan’s acceptance. A separate photograph of the same scene was taken by Navy photographer Victor Jorgensen.
