In which city was the ancient Olympic Games first held?

The story behind the answer

The ancient Olympic Games were first held at Olympia.

Olympia was a sanctuary in the western Peloponnese of Greece dedicated primarily to Zeus. The earliest securely recorded Olympic Games took place there in 776 BC, although Greek tradition treated the festival as much older. Competitions were held every four years as part of a religious celebration.

Events originally centered on foot races and later expanded to wrestling, boxing, chariot racing, the pentathlon, and other contests. Athletes competed as representatives of Greek cities, and a sacred truce was associated with the festival to allow travel to and from Olympia.

The ancient games continued for many centuries before being suppressed in the late fourth century AD, after the Roman Empire adopted Christianity. The modern Olympic Games began in Athens in 1896, but the Olympic movement deliberately took its name and inspiration from Olympia.
