In which city was the 2016 Summer Olympics opening ceremony held?

The story behind the answer

The 2016 Summer Olympics opening ceremony was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The ceremony took place on 5 August 2016 at the Maracanã Stadium, officially the Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho. It opened the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, which ran through 21 August and used venues across Rio de Janeiro. The event was notable as the first Summer Olympics held in South America.

The ceremony combined Brazilian history, music, environmental themes, and performances by Brazilian artists. The Olympic cauldron was lit by Brazilian marathon runner Vanderlei de Lima, who had received the Pierre de Coubertin Medal at the 2004 Athens Games. The Rio Games included 28 sports and introduced rugby sevens and golf to the Olympic program.

Rio 2016 is sometimes confused with the 2016 Summer Paralympics, which followed in the same host city from 7 to 18 September. The Olympics were also the first Games held in a Portuguese-speaking country.
