In which city was Japan’s separate surrender ceremony to China held on September 9, 1945?

The story behind the answer

Japan’s separate surrender ceremony to China was held in Nanjing on September 9, 1945.

The ceremony ended the Second Sino-Japanese War in China and took place one week after the main Allied surrender ceremony in Tokyo Bay. General Yasuji Okamura, commander-in-chief of the Japanese China Expeditionary Army, signed Japan’s surrender document there.

The Chinese Allied representative was General He Yingqin, commander-in-chief of the Republic of China National Revolutionary Army. British Major General Eric Hayes and other Allied representatives also attended. The ceremony was held at the auditorium of the Central Army Military Academy in Nanjing.

This event is distinct from the September 2 ceremony aboard USS Missouri, which formally ended Japan’s war with the broader Allied coalition. Japan’s forces in different theaters surrendered at additional ceremonies, including Singapore on September 12. Nanjing was chosen for the China theater because it had been the wartime capital of the collaborationist Reorganized National Government and remained a major political and military center.
