The Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, is located in Dubai.
The skyscraper stands 828 metres tall in Downtown Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It officially opened on 4 January 2010 after construction began in 2004. The tower was designed by the Chicago-based firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, with Adrian Smith serving as chief architect.
Its three-lobed floor plan was inspired by the form of a desert flower and traditional regional architectural patterns. The building contains residences, offices, hotel space, observation areas, and mechanical floors. Its height requires specialized elevators, structural engineering, and systems designed to manage strong winds.
The tower was initially known during development as Burj Dubai and was renamed Burj Khalifa in honour of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Dubai is part of the emirate of Dubai, while Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates.
