In which city is the Louvre Museum located?

The story behind the answer

The Louvre Museum is located in Paris, France.

It occupies the Louvre Palace on the Right Bank of the Seine, in Paris’s 1st arrondissement. The building began as a medieval fortress under Philip II in the late twelfth century, then gradually became a royal palace. Francis I converted it into a principal royal residence in the sixteenth century, and later kings expanded and remodelled it.

The Louvre became a public museum during the French Revolution, opening on 10 August 1793. Its early collection was drawn largely from royal holdings and property confiscated from the Church and émigrés. Today it contains major departments devoted to painting, sculpture, Egyptian antiquities, Greek and Roman antiquities, Islamic art, decorative arts, and works on paper.

Visitors often associate the museum primarily with Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, but its collection also includes the Venus de Milo and the Winged Victory of Samothrace. The glass Pyramid in the Cour Napoléon, completed in 1989, is its best-known modern entrance.
