In which city is the headquarters of the International Court of Justice located?

The story behind the answer

The headquarters of the International Court of Justice is in The Hague, Netherlands.

The International Court of Justice, or ICJ, is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. It was established by the UN Charter in 1945 and began work in 1946, succeeding the Permanent Court of International Justice. The court hears disputes between states and gives advisory opinions on legal questions referred by authorized UN bodies and agencies.

The ICJ is based in the Peace Palace, a landmark building in The Hague. Its judges are elected by the UN General Assembly and Security Council for nine-year terms, and no two judges may be nationals of the same country at the same time.

The ICJ should not be confused with the International Criminal Court, which prosecutes individuals for certain serious crimes and is also located in The Hague. The ICJ deals primarily with states, making its role different from that of a criminal tribunal.
