In which city is the headquarters of the European Union’s European Commission?

The story behind the answer

The European Commission’s headquarters are in Brussels, Belgium.

The European Commission is the executive branch of the European Union. It proposes new EU legislation, manages policies and funding, and helps enforce European law. Its main offices are in the Berlaymont building in Brussels, close to other major EU institutions.

Brussels is often called the de facto capital of the European Union because the Commission, the European Council, and the Council of the European Union are based there. The European Parliament also holds committee and plenary work in Brussels, although its official seat is in Strasbourg.

That division creates a common source of confusion. Strasbourg hosts the Parliament’s monthly plenary sessions, while Luxembourg hosts the Court of Justice of the European Union and other bodies. The Commission’s political and administrative centre, however, is Brussels.
