In which city is the Hagia Sophia monument located?

The story behind the answer

Hagia Sophia is located in Istanbul, Türkiye.

The present building was completed in 537 under the Byzantine emperor Justinian I. For nearly a thousand years, it served as the cathedral of Constantinople and was the largest cathedral in the world for much of that period.

After the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453, Hagia Sophia became a mosque. It was converted into a museum in 1935 and was reconverted into a mosque in 2020, while remaining open to visitors under rules designed to protect its historic features.

The monument stands in Istanbul’s historic Sultanahmet district, close to the Blue Mosque and the former Byzantine Hippodrome. Istanbul was called Constantinople for much of Hagia Sophia’s early history; Ankara has been Türkiye’s capital since 1923.
