In which city is the Colosseum located?

The Colosseum is located in Rome, Italy.

The ancient amphitheatre stands in the centre of Rome, immediately east of the Roman Forum. In antiquity it was known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, after the Flavian dynasty that sponsored its construction. The modern name probably derives from the colossal statue of Nero that once stood nearby.

The Colosseum was built in a valley between Rome’s Caelian, Esquiline, and Palatine Hills. Its location was politically meaningful: Emperor Vespasian replaced part of Nero’s private palace complex and artificial lake with a vast public arena. That decision presented the building as a return of urban space to the Roman people.

Rome is the key distinction in this question. London, Paris, and Athens each have famous ancient or monumental sites, but none is the city where the Colosseum stands. The amphitheatre hosted gladiatorial contests, animal hunts, executions, and other public spectacles before its use declined in late antiquity.
