In which city is Shakespeare's Globe Theatre located?
Answer
London
Answer
London
Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre is located in London, on Bankside in the London Borough of Southwark.
The original Globe was built in 1599 by the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, the acting company associated with William Shakespeare. It stood south of the River Thames, outside the jurisdiction of the City of London, where theatres and other entertainments were concentrated. Shakespeare’s plays, including Hamlet, Othello and King Lear, were performed there.
The first Globe burned down on 29 June 1613 during a performance of Henry VIII, after a theatrical cannon ignited its thatched roof. A rebuilt Globe opened on the same site in 1614 but closed in 1642 when London’s theatres were shut during the Puritan period.
The modern Shakespeare’s Globe is a reconstruction that opened in 1997, close to the original site. Stratford-upon-Avon is Shakespeare’s birthplace and a major Shakespeare heritage town, but it is not where the Globe Theatre is located.
