In which city is Michelangelo's sculpture “Madonna of Bruges” located? The answer is Bruges.
The marble Madonna and Child was carved by Michelangelo around 1501–1504 and is now kept in the Church of Our Lady in Bruges, Belgium. It depicts the Virgin Mary standing beside the Christ Child, who appears to move away from her while she looks downward in restrained contemplation.
The sculpture was probably intended for Siena Cathedral, but it was purchased in Italy by the Bruges merchants Jan and Alexander Mouscron. They donated it to the Church of Our Lady in 1514, giving the work the name by which it is now widely known. It is especially notable as the only sculpture by Michelangelo known to have left Italy during his lifetime.
The title can cause a geographical mix-up: Bruges is a Belgian city, but it is not Brussels, Ghent or Antwerp. The work has also had a turbulent history. It was taken by French forces during the Revolutionary period and later looted by Nazi Germany in 1944 before being recovered and returned.
