The Hogmanay Torchlight Procession traditionally takes place in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Edinburgh's Hogmanay is a large New Year's celebration held around the end of December. Its events have included concerts, street parties, fireworks, and the Torchlight Procession, in which participants carry flaming torches through the city. The procession typically ends at or near Holyrood Park, creating a striking river of light beneath Edinburgh's historic skyline.
“Hogmanay” is the Scottish term for New Year's Eve festivities, although its exact linguistic origin remains debated. Modern Edinburgh Hogmanay developed into a major organized festival in the late twentieth century, building on Scotland's longstanding customs of visiting friends and welcoming the new year.
The torchlight event is sometimes confused with the entire Hogmanay festival. They are related but not identical: Edinburgh's Hogmanay covers multiple events, while the procession is one particular ceremony within the program. Dates and routes can change from year to year.
