In which city does the Christ the Redeemer statue stand above Mount Corcovado?

The story behind the answer

Christ the Redeemer stands above Mount Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro.

The Art Deco statue overlooks the Brazilian city from the summit of Corcovado, within the Tijuca National Park. The monument depicts Jesus Christ with outstretched arms, a pose interpreted as a welcoming embrace and a symbol of peace. Its design is associated with Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa and French-Polish sculptor Paul Landowski.

Construction began in 1926 and the statue was inaugurated on October 12, 1931. The figure is 30 metres tall, while its pedestal adds another 8 metres. It is built from reinforced concrete and covered with triangular soapstone tiles, which workers and volunteers applied by hand.

The statue is sometimes confused with the smaller Christ the Redeemer monuments found in other countries. Rio’s monument is especially recognizable because of its setting above a major coastal metropolis, with Sugarloaf Mountain and Guanabara Bay nearby. It became one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in a 2007 international poll.
