In which city does the Battle of the Pelennor Fields take place?

The Battle of the Pelennor Fields takes place at Minas Tirith, more precisely on the Pelennor Fields outside the city. Minas Tirith is the fortified capital of Gondor, and the surrounding farmland forms the city’s defensive outer territory along the eastern side of the White Mountains.

In The Return of the King, Sauron’s forces cross the Pelennor and besiege Minas Tirith after Gondor’s outer defenses fail. The city itself is the central objective of the assault, while the decisive fighting occurs across the fields between its walls and the River Anduin. Gondorian defenders and the arriving Rohirrim fight to prevent the city’s capture.

The battle is often summarized simply as occurring “at Minas Tirith,” which is fair for a quiz answer, even though the battlefield is technically the Pelennor Fields. Osgiliath lies farther east and falls earlier in the campaign. Helm’s Deep is the site of a different battle in Rohan, and Edoras is Rohan’s capital.
