In which city did the Buddha perform the 'Twin Miracle'?

The story behind the answer

The Buddha performed the Twin Miracle in Sravasti, also called Savatthi or Shravasti.

In Buddhist accounts, the event took place in the ancient city of Sravasti during a public challenge from six rival religious teachers. The Buddha’s miracle is traditionally described as a simultaneous display of fire and water: flames emerged from the upper part of his body while streams of water came from the lower part, with the elements then alternating. Some versions also describe multiple manifestations of the Buddha teaching in the air.

The miracle is associated with a mango tree and is often placed at the city’s outskirts or at the foot of a specially manifested mango tree. Buddhist tradition dates it to seven years after the Buddha’s enlightenment, although the narrative belongs to religious literature rather than independently verified history.

Sravasti was one of the Buddha’s most important teaching centers. He is said to have spent many rainy-season retreats there, especially at Jetavana monastery, donated by the wealthy supporter Anathapindika. The city is therefore linked not only with the Twin Miracle but also with a large portion of the Buddha’s teaching career.

Kapilavastu is sometimes confused with Sravasti because another miraculous display is said to have occurred during the Buddha’s return to his home region.
