In which city did Japan hold its separate surrender ceremony to China in 1945?

The story behind the answer

Japan held its separate surrender ceremony to China in Nanjing in 1945.

The ceremony took place on 9 September 1945, one week after the main Allied surrender ceremony aboard USS Missouri. General He Yingqin accepted the surrender on behalf of the Nationalist Chinese government from General Yasuji Okamura, Japan’s commander in China.

Nanjing had been the capital of the Republic of China during much of the war and had been occupied by Japan since December 1937. Holding the ceremony there gave the Chinese theater its own formal conclusion and symbolized the restoration of Chinese authority over territories held by Japanese forces.

This event is separate from Japan’s general surrender in Tokyo Bay. The Missouri ceremony covered Japan’s capitulation to the Allied powers as a whole, while the Nanjing ceremony dealt specifically with Japanese forces in the China theater. Other Japanese forces surrendered in separate regional ceremonies across Asia and the Pacific.
