Georgia O'Keeffe studied at the Art Institute of Chicago in Chicago.
She attended the school from 1905 to 1906 after completing early art training in Wisconsin. The Art Institute was one of the leading American art schools, and its curriculum emphasized drawing, painting, and close study of works in the museum's collection.
O'Keeffe later studied at the Art Students League in New York, where she worked under William Merritt Chase. She also trained as an art teacher and spent several years teaching before making abstraction central to her practice.
Chicago is sometimes overlooked in accounts of O'Keeffe because New York and New Mexico became more important locations in her mature career. Nevertheless, her time at the Art Institute formed part of the conventional academic training she would eventually challenge through her simplified forms and abstract compositions.
