In which city did Fyodor Dostoevsky die in 1881?
Answer
Saint Petersburg
Answer
Saint Petersburg
Fyodor Dostoevsky died in Saint Petersburg in 1881.
Dostoevsky spent much of his literary career in Saint Petersburg, the setting for several of his major works. He died there on 9 February 1881 (28 January under the old Julian calendar), after suffering from emphysema and other health problems.
His funeral procession drew thousands of mourners, reflecting his extraordinary reputation in Russia. He was buried at Tikhvin Cemetery in the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, a historic monastery complex in Saint Petersburg.
A common mix-up is confusing his birthplace, Moscow, with the city where he died. Saint Petersburg also differs from Omsk, where he served his Siberian penal-labor sentence earlier in life.
