In which city did Christian Doppler die in 1853?

The story behind the answer

Christian Doppler died in Venice in 1853. He died on 17 March 1853, aged 49, after suffering from pulmonary disease. At the time, Venice was part of the Austrian Empire, rather than the independent Italy familiar today.

Doppler had moved through several Central European academic posts during his career. He worked in Prague, taught in the mining academy at Selmecbánya, and became head of the Institute for Experimental Physics at the University of Vienna in 1850. Although Vienna was his final professional base, it was not where he died.

His tomb is in San Michele Cemetery, on the Venetian island of San Michele. This detail helps distinguish the answer from Salzburg, where Doppler was born, and Prague, where he spent an important decade and presented his famous 1842 paper. The Doppler effect is named for his principle that observed wave frequency changes with relative motion between source and observer.
