Banksy staged the month-long project Better Out Than In in New York City.

The residency took place during October 2013, when Banksy released or installed a new work in New York on most days. The title came from a quotation attributed to Paul Cézanne and played on the relationship between gallery art and art placed outside in public view.

Banksy used a website, photographs and audio commentary to document the project. The works appeared in several boroughs and included murals, sculptures and installations. Their locations quickly became attractions, while some were removed, damaged or painted over.

Better Out Than In is sometimes described as a conventional exhibition, but it was principally a city-wide, temporary street-art project. Its public format also created disputes over property, preservation and who could control artwork painted on buildings and infrastructure.
