Banksy painted The Mild Mild West in Bristol.
The mural appeared in Bristol in 1999 and shows a teddy bear throwing a Molotov cocktail toward three riot police officers. Its title is a play on the phrase “the Wild West,” replacing “wild” with “mild” while retaining a scene of confrontation.
The work was painted on a wall in Bristol’s Stokes Croft area. It became one of the city’s best-known Banksy murals and is frequently treated as an important example of his early public work.
The Mild Mild West is sometimes confused with other Banksy protest images featuring police, including Kissing Coppers. The teddy bear, riot police, and Molotov cocktail identify this mural, while Bristol identifies its city.
