In which circle of Hell are the lustful punished?
Answer
Second circle
Answer
Second circle
In Dante’s Inferno, the lustful are punished in the second circle of Hell. This is the first circle Dante enters after passing through Limbo, and it marks the beginning of punishments for sins committed through deliberate appetite and passion.
The souls here are swept endlessly through a violent, dark whirlwind. Dante compares their motion to birds driven through the air by a storm. The punishment represents how lust allowed desire to overpower reason during their lives: in death, they can never control their direction or find rest.
Among the famous figures Dante meets are Francesca da Rimini and her lover Paolo. Francesca tells Dante that their forbidden love began while reading the story of Lancelot and Guinevere. Their account makes the circle one of the poem’s most emotionally memorable episodes, blending sympathy with moral judgment.
The second circle is often confused with the third, which is reserved for gluttony and guarded by Cerberus. Limbo comes first and contains virtuous non-Christians and the unbaptized, but it is not presented as a punishment for lust or another active sin.
