In which church is The Last Supper located?

The story behind the answer

The Last Supper is located at Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy.

Leonardo da Vinci painted the mural on the north wall of the Dominican convent’s refectory, or dining hall, rather than inside the church’s main nave. The church and convent complex was commissioned and developed during the Renaissance, with major architectural work associated with Guiniforte Solari and Donato Bramante.

The work was commissioned by Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan, as part of his plans for Santa Maria delle Grazie to serve as a family mausoleum. Leonardo worked on the mural roughly between 1495 and 1498. A common mix-up is choosing the Sistine Chapel, which is famous for Michelangelo’s ceiling and Last Judgment in Vatican City. The Last Supper is not in Rome, nor is it in Milan Cathedral, known as the Duomo di Milano.

Santa Maria delle Grazie and Leonardo’s mural together became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980.
