In which Chinese city was the World War II surrender ceremony for Japanese forces in China held on September 9, 1945?

The story behind the answer

The surrender ceremony for Japanese forces in China was held in Nanjing on September 9, 1945.

The ceremony took place one week after Japan's formal surrender aboard USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. It ended organized Japanese military operations in China and was held at the auditorium of the Central Army Military Academy in Nanjing, then the capital of the Republic of China.

General He Yingqin represented the Chinese government and accepted the surrender from Lieutenant General Yasuji Okamura, commander of Japanese forces in China. The event was separate from the Tokyo Bay ceremony because Japanese forces across Asia and the Pacific surrendered to different Allied commanders in local ceremonies.

Nanjing held particular symbolic importance. Japanese forces had captured the city during the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937, and the occupation had been accompanied by the Nanjing Massacre. The 1945 ceremony therefore marked the end of Japanese military control in China, although political and military conflict in China soon shifted into renewed civil war between Nationalist and Communist forces.
