In which Chinese city was the 1945 surrender ceremony ending the Second Sino-Japanese War held?

The story behind the answer

The 1945 surrender ceremony ending the Second Sino-Japanese War was held in Nanjing.

The ceremony took place on September 9, 1945, at the auditorium of the Central Army Military Academy in Nanjing. General Yasuji Okamura signed for the Japanese forces, while General He Yingqin represented the Republic of China and accepted the surrender.

The event occurred one week after Japan’s formal surrender to the Allies aboard USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. It dealt specifically with Japanese forces in China and therefore formed a regional surrender ceremony within the wider end of World War II.

Nanjing had been the capital of the Republic of China before the war and had been captured by Japan in December 1937. The city’s selection made the ceremony especially significant in the history of the Second Sino-Japanese War. Japan transferred control of Taiwan to the Republic of China later that autumn.
