Japan's surrender ceremony for the China theater occurred in Nanjing on September 9, 1945.
The ceremony took place at 9 a.m. local time in the auditorium of the Central Army Military Academy. General He Yingqin accepted the surrender of Japanese forces in China from General Yasuji Okamura, who represented the Japanese forces in the theater.
Nanjing had been the capital of the Republic of China during much of the Second Sino-Japanese War. The city's selection gave the ceremony major political and historical significance, although the wider Japanese surrender had already been signed in Tokyo Bay on September 2.
The Nanjing event is therefore a regional surrender ceremony, not the ceremony that formally ended World War II worldwide. Japanese forces in other areas surrendered in separate ceremonies, including events in Southeast Asia, the Philippines, and the Pacific islands.
