In which century did the modern European-style quinceañera become more prominent in Mexico?

The story behind the answer

The modern European-style quinceañera became more prominent in Mexico during the 19th century.

During that period, Mexican elites adopted European-influenced fashions and formal social customs. The quinceañera developed into a highly staged celebration that could include an elegant dress, a formal court, a presentation, and a dance modeled partly on European ballroom traditions. These elements were layered onto older coming-of-age and religious practices.

The 19th-century development does not mean the idea of marking adolescence began then. Earlier Indigenous and colonial customs contributed to the broader history, while the recognizable formal format continued to change during the 20th century.

Modern celebrations are therefore historical hybrids. A family may preserve a church blessing or symbolic ritual while also using contemporary music, photography, themes, and reception styles.
